What it is

TEKNOFEST is Turkey's aerospace, defence and technology festival, and it is considerably larger than that description makes it sound. It runs in several regional editions a year rather than as a single annual event, each combining an airshow, an exhibition of Turkish defence and aviation industry hardware, and a set of national technology competitions that student teams spend the year qualifying for.

The Mavi Vatan, or Blue Homeland, edition is the maritime-themed one, staged at the Golcuk Naval Shipyard Command on the Sea of Marmara. The 2026 edition drew 343,000 visitors across four days by the organisers' count, which is the kind of figure that reshapes a mid-sized city's transport and accommodation for the week it runs, not just the weekend.

It is worth being clear about what this is not. There is no nightlife dimension to TEKNOFEST at all. The crowd is overwhelmingly local, family-led and young, the programme runs in daylight around flying displays and exhibition halls, and the venue is an active naval facility rather than an entertainment site. We list it on Radar because it is one of the largest gatherings in the country and because anyone travelling in the region during it will feel the effect, not because we think our readers should be planning a night around it.

The competitions are the part outsiders usually miss. Teams compete across categories spanning rocketry, unmanned aerial and underwater vehicles, agricultural technology and artificial intelligence, and the finals are held live on site. If you are visiting with anyone studying engineering, that is the reason to go rather than the airshow.

Getting there and back

Golcuk is in Kocaeli province on the southern shore of the Gulf of Izmit, roughly two hours east of Istanbul by road in ordinary traffic and meaningfully longer during the festival. This is a road trip, not a metro ride: there is no direct rail connection to the shipyard site itself.

Past editions have run free shuttle buses during the festival days from collection points in Kocaeli and from Istanbul. The arrangement is set per edition and published on the official site, so check there closer to the date rather than assuming a previous year's route still runs.

Practical note for anyone in the region for other reasons: accommodation in Kocaeli, Izmit and Golcuk fills for the festival week, and the coastal road towards the shipyard is heavily congested on the busiest days, which are typically the weekend ones.

What it costs

Free. TEKNOFEST has been a free public event at every edition held to date, including the 2026 Mavi Vatan edition, and entry is by registration through the official site rather than a paid ticket.

The costs are travel and accommodation, and both spike locally for the festival week. If you are coming from Istanbul for the day, driving out and back is the usual pattern precisely because hotel availability nearby is the binding constraint.

Who it is for

Families, students and anyone with an interest in aviation, defence technology or space. The competition finals in particular are aimed squarely at a school and university audience.

Photographers and aviation enthusiasts, for the flying displays, which are the main draw for most of the attendance.

Anyone travelling in the Kocaeli region during the festival window, who mainly needs to know it is happening so that transport and hotels do not come as a surprise.

Common questions

Is TEKNOFEST free?

Yes. Entry has been free at every edition to date, including TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan in August 2026. Registration through the official site is required but carries no charge.

How many people attend TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan?

The organisers reported 343,000 visitors across the four days of the 2026 edition at Golcuk.

When is the next TEKNOFEST?

Dates for the next edition have not been announced. TEKNOFEST runs several regional editions a year and each one's dates are published separately on the official site.

How do I get to Golcuk from Istanbul?

By road, roughly two hours east in normal traffic and longer during the festival. Past editions have run free shuttle buses from Istanbul and Kocaeli during the event days, with the routes published per edition on the official site.

Is TEKNOFEST worth visiting if I am not into defence technology?

The airshow is the general-audience draw and works on its own terms. Beyond that it is an industry exhibition and a student competition, so if neither of those appeals, the honest answer is that the scale is the only reason to go.
