Seb-i Arus (Mevlana Commemoration Ceremonies)

Seb-i Arus, meaning the wedding night, is the annual commemoration of the death of Mevlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi in 1273. The name is his own framing: he described his death as a reunion with the divine rather than a loss, which is why the ceremonies are a commemoration and not a mourning.

The centre of it is the Sema, the whirling ceremony of the Mevlevi order, which UNESCO added to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. Programmes at the Mevlana Culture Center typically open with Quranic recitation, move through a discussion of the Mesnevi and a Turkish Sufi music performance, and close with the Sema itself, running around two hours in total.

It runs across ten days rather than one night, from 7 to 17 December, with the anniversary itself on the 17th as the peak. That is worth knowing when planning, because the demand for the final night is in a different category from the rest of the programme.

Two things to be clear about. This is a religious commemoration, not a performance, and the audience is expected to treat it as one: no applause during the Sema, and photography restrictions at the ceremonial venues. And Konya is a considerably more conservative city than Istanbul, which shapes what an evening there looks like well beyond the ceremony.

Konya sits on Turkey's high-speed rail network with direct services from Ankara and Istanbul, which is how most out-of-town visitors arrive, and it has its own airport. Rail is the practical choice from either city.

Within Konya, the Mevlana Culture Center and the Mevlana Museum, Rumi's tomb, are the two anchors, and the city's tram line connects the centre. Distances are small compared with Istanbul.

Book accommodation early. The commemoration fills Konya's hotels for the December window, and it is one of the few times of year that is genuinely true.

The main Sema ceremonies are ticketed through the official channel. Reported prices for evening ceremonies have been in the region of 250 to 300 lira per person, which is the figure circulating in visitor coverage rather than an official published rate, so treat it as an order of magnitude rather than a quote.

Much of the wider ten-day programme, including talks, exhibitions and smaller events across the city, is free to attend.

The larger cost for most visitors is Konya accommodation during the window rather than the ceremony tickets themselves.

Visitors interested in a genuinely significant cultural and religious ceremony, approached on its own terms rather than as a spectacle.

Anyone travelling in central Anatolia in December, for whom the effect on Konya's hotels and transport is worth knowing about regardless of whether they attend.

It is emphatically not a night out, and we would rather say that plainly than list it alongside a concert without the distinction.
