Istanbul Film Festival

This is the city's principal film festival and, at 45 editions, one of the oldest cultural fixtures in Turkey. The 2026 edition screened 127 films over eleven days from 9 to 19 April, sponsored by N Kolay and organised by IKSV, the same foundation behind the jazz, music and theatre festivals.

The programme mixes international and Turkish premieres with competition strands and retrospectives, and the retrospectives are usually the part regulars build their schedule around, since they are the screenings that will not come back. Its competition awards carry real weight within Turkish cinema.

Like the jazz festival, it runs across multiple cinemas rather than a single venue, which makes it a schedule to plan rather than a place to turn up at. Regulars book several screenings across the run and treat the gaps between them as the point, because the festival crowd spills into the cafes and bars around Beyoglu between films.
