International Izmir Festival

Izmir's answer to the IKSV festivals in Istanbul, and at 39 editions no younger. The 2026 edition ran for over a month, from 4 June to 8 July, which is a longer window than most festivals of its kind attempt.

The venue list is the reason to pay attention. Alongside the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center, a modern concert hall in central Izmir, the festival stages performances at the city's Roman-era Agora, at Cesme Castle on the coast, and at the Celsus Library at Ephesus. Very few festivals anywhere have that quality of historic site available, and fewer still are permitted to use them.

Ephesus is the one people travel for. A concert in front of the Celsus Library facade, at night, with the site otherwise closed, is a genuinely rare thing and is priced and sold accordingly. If a date there fits your trip, build around it.

The programme leans classical and orchestral with jazz and world music alongside it, which is a narrower proposition than the Istanbul jazz festival's spread. Worth knowing before booking on the strength of the venues alone.

Venues run from central Izmir out to Cesme on the coast and Ephesus near Selcuk, so this is not a festival with a single point of arrival. Read the venue before booking the concert.

The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center is in central Izmir and straightforward on city transport. Ephesus and Cesme are not: both realistically need a car or organised transport, particularly for an evening performance that finishes after regular services have thinned out.

Selcuk, next to Ephesus, is on the regional rail line from Izmir and is the usual base for anyone attending an Ephesus concert without driving. Confirm the last service before relying on it.

Ticketed per concert through IKSEV, with pricing set by performance and venue. Some events within the programme are free.

The historic-site concerts, Ephesus in particular, sit at the top of the range and sell earliest. The Art Center dates are the more affordable end.

Transport to the outlying venues is a real cost line for anyone without a car, and worth budgeting alongside the ticket.

Classical, orchestral and world music audiences building an Aegean coast trip, for whom the festival gives a summer month's worth of anchors.

Anyone who wants to see Ephesus or the Izmir Agora at night, in use rather than as a daytime archaeological visit.

Less suited to visitors staying only in central Izmir without transport, since the signature venues are the ones outside the city.
