Sometimes you need to trade the city for something completely different, and Cappadocia is the perfect escape. A short one-hour flight drops you into a dreamlike landscape of fairy chimneys, cave towns and hundreds of hot air balloons drifting over the valleys at dawn. Two days is genuinely enough to see the best of it.
Cappadocia has two airports, both about an hour's flight from Istanbul. Nevşehir is closer to the main villages, while Kayseri has more flight options but a slightly longer transfer. Either way, book a shuttle or hotel transfer in advance, since public transport from the airports is limited. Most people fly in Friday evening or early Saturday and back on Sunday night, which makes a tidy 48-hour trip.

Flights are grounded fairly often for wind or weather, especially in winter, and you get a refund or reschedule rather than a lost booking. Build a spare morning into your trip if you can, and pick accommodation that lets you rebook easily. Bring layers; dawn in the basket is cold even in summer.

Budget: Göreme guesthouses and cave hostels. Göreme is packed with family-run cave pensions and hostels where you can sleep inside carved stone for very little. Simple but characterful, often with a terrace facing the balloon-filled sky. Location: Göreme town centre, walkable to tour meeting points and the bus station.
Mid-range: boutique cave hotels. The sweet spot for most weekenders. Boutique cave hotels in Göreme and Uçhisar offer beautifully restored stone rooms, generous breakfasts and terraces made for watching the sunrise balloons. Location: Göreme and Uçhisar, book a room with a valley-facing terrace.
Luxury: Uçhisar cliff hotels. For a special occasion, the cliffside luxury cave hotels of Uçhisar deliver plunge pools, spa treatments and jaw-dropping panoramas across the whole region. This is where the postcard photos of terraces framed by balloons are taken. Location: Uçhisar, on the ridge above the valleys, short transfer to Göreme.
What the weekend costs
A rough per-person guide for 2026: return flights from Istanbul often run 60 to 120 euros if booked ahead, a balloon ride starts around 85 euros and climbs to 200-plus euros for premium flights, two nights in a mid-range cave hotel is roughly 80 to 160 euros, and a group tour with lunch is about 35 to 50 euros. All in, a comfortable weekend is achievable for around 300 to 450 euros per person, less if you go budget on the room.
Book the balloon ride before anything else, because flights are weather-dependent and cancel often, especially in winter. Choose a hotel that offers a free reschedule if the balloon is grounded, and if you can, build in a spare morning so a cancellation does not end your only chance.
